Spectacular vintage rattan armchair and footstool produced by Yamakawa Rattan company circa 1990s. Good vintage condition.

Yamakawa Rattan was founded in Tokyo in 1952 by Hichiro Yamakawa. It began in his backyard as a therapeutic outlet for his two sons who were both hearing impaired. A third son, Yuzuru Yamakawa, studied design in the evenings while helping his father to run the company. Yuzuru was the co-winner of the Governor of Tokyo Prize in 1954, and a co-winner of the gold medal at the Milan Triennale in 1957. Yamakawa Rattan was the first Japanese company to have its designs selected for the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 1964.

Yamakawa Rattan still produces furniture today in their workshops in Indonesia.
