The Ash Lamp is a variation of our Casita Lamp, and the difference is in the firing. After being formed by hand from red clay by ceramicist Eligio Zárate Blanco in Santa María Aztompa, each base is fired in a gas kiln and then placed in a traditional wood-fired kiln surrounded by smouldering sawdust. The resulting blackened pattern on each piece is unique, shaped by fire and position in the kiln rather than by design.

The palm shade is woven by award-winning weaver Belén Perez Garcia, who harvests indigenous palm leaves from the hills near her home in Oaxaca, selecting young leaves for sage green shades and mature leaves for blonde.

The Ash is the more characterful of our two Oaxacan table lamps. It sits well in a bedroom, living room, or on a side table where a sculptural piece with a genuine material story earns its place.

We offer in-person and virtual appointments  so you can choose your specific base and shade.

Wired in Los Angeles to US standards with a vanilla cord and brass fittings. Available with a sage green or blonde shade. Trade pricing available for interior designers and architects.

MATERIAL

LIGHT SHADE: Mexican Fan Palm (Washingtonia robusta) is Native to northwestern Mexico. This palm thrives in arid landscapes and has been used by indigenous communities for centuries. The young fronds are harvested without harming the tree, or gathered from the ground, then dried in the sun until they reach the ideal pliability for weaving. Artisans slice the distinctive fan-shaped fronds into strips, carefully preparing each piece to preserve the material's natural strength and flexibility.

Light and flexible, the palm allows artisans to create tight, intricate weaves using techniques passed down through generations. The fronds' pleated structure provides inherent texture, while their color, ranging from blonde to silver to sage green depending on harvest timing, brings organic variation and warmth to woven pieces.

PROCESS + PARTNERS

Belén Perez Garcia has won awards for her fine palm weaving. She weaves in a group of local women who harvest and process palm leaves at different stages of maturity to produce different colored shades.

Eligio Zárate Blanco is a celebrated potter from Santa María Aztompa whose craft has been passed down through generations of family. The red clay they use comes from local mountains, and is fired in a gas kiln followed by a traditional wood-fired kiln. The toasted effect of these pieces is achieved in the wood-fired kiln where they are surrounded by smouldering sawdust, giving each a unique blackened pattern.
