STUDIO STORIES | Sarah Carter x Moon House

Los Angeles–based actor, writer and producer Sarah Carter is undertaking a design project to restore a mid-century home in LA's iconic Laurel Canyon neighborhood. The house was designed in 1952 by its original owner, American architect Kipp Stewart, and has since been through various owners and additions. 'Moon House' is the newest iteration of the Stewart home:

Proportion, light, authenticity, and craft are at the forefront of this historical home’s design.

We were delighted to host Sarah and her team at our studio for an afternoon of craft-focused conversation with our co-founder, MJ, while Sarah chose which Twenty One Tonnes' pieces to incorporate into Moon House.

We stepped into the Twenty One Tonnes studio on a golden summer afternoon, and the space seemed to hum with life. Light filtered through the woven basketry, dancing across the room in intricate, shifting patterns — a luminous celebration of a rich history, of gifts passed down through generations, through the hands of makers who pour themselves into every creation. Each surface invited a closer look, every texture told its own story, and the energy of these gifted artisans radiated from every corner, drawing us in and leaving us both mesmerized and deeply inspired.

The pair of Ash Lamps that Sarah chose for Moon House are the work of two Mexican artists: potter Eligio Zárate Blanco and award-winning palm weaver Belén Perez Garcia.

Their red Oaxacan clay bases, fired in traditional wood kilns, bear unique blackened patterns that tell the story of fire and time. The hand crafted shades, with palm leaves collected and woven by Belén, filter light through such a fine weave that they offer a warm glow unlike any other.

Sarah is documenting her renovation of Moon House, and highlighting the artists, designers, and craftspeople giving shape to the space. One of the short films she and her team created features a visit to the Twenty One Tonnes studio.

Each surface invited a closer look, every texture told its own story, and the energy of these gifted artisans radiated from every corner, drawing us in and leaving us both mesmerized and deeply inspired.

The film explores the different materials and weaving styles displayed throughout our space, and captures a conversation between Sarah and our co-founder MJ about the philosophy behind our work.

We were touched that Sarah took time to visit the studio and learn about our artisan partnerships. Her film reflects the core belief at the heart of our business: choosing handcrafted pieces supports women artisans, preserves traditional techniques, and brings authentic humanity into spaces.
