REINTRODUCING: THE OAK LAMP

REINTRODUCING: THE OAK LAMP

We're thrilled to relaunch this beloved lamp.

Partnering with Surcle Wood, a local family-owned sustainable wood shop in Los Angeles, has allowed us to refine the Oak Lamp in a way that deepens the craft behind it. Julie Jackson and Jonathan Meador founded Surcle in 2015 with the idea to salvage downed urban trees and transform them into furniture and lighting on what Julie calls their "mega-lathe." Julie comes from a family of woodworkers, and her approach to each piece of salvaged oak reflects that lineage. These are urban trees that came down in storms or needed removal, and they're unique because of the grain patterns you find in urban-grown wood which are unlike anything available in conventional lumber.

The shade tells the other half of this story. Our enduring partners at SWOPA, the Sirigu Women's Organization for Pottery and Art in northern Ghana, hand-weave each shade from elephant grass. This material choice goes beyond aesthetics, though the result is undeniably beautiful. Elephant grass is structurally sound, renews quickly, and the way its long fibers diffuse light is something you can't replicate with fabric or paper. SWOPA's mission centers on skills training and preserving traditional craft knowledge by passing it to the next generation. When you turn on this lamp, you're seeing the result of that knowledge.

This is still the Oak Lamp: 58 inches tall, brass fittings, black cloth cord, and a clean silhouette that works in most interiors without demanding attention. Each base is hand-turned from American oak in the same honey finish as the original Oak Lamp. Made to order, with a six-week lead time.

We're proud of this piece because it connects traditional craft that supports women artisans in northern Ghana with Julie's considered woodwork in Los Angeles, and because it's a genuinely elegant lighting solution that feels at home in nearly any space.
