INTRODUCING | The TV Lamp

We're thrilled to introduce the TV Lamp, a piece that embodies everything we love about cross-continental collaboration and the beauty of handmade objects.

Designing The TV Lamp

The TV Lamp is a beautifully proportioned floor lamp that pairs a steel tripod base with handwoven shade. The design was inspired by Noguchi's iconic paper floor lamps, and produces a similarly soft natural light.

"Like Noguchi's paper lanterns, we wanted to create a compelling interplay of structure and softness. But here the dialogue is between the linearity of steel and the organic woven irregularities that come from human hands."   -  designers Chessa Osburn & Mary Jane Bolton

The TV Lamp's silhouette brings to mind mid-century television sets on legs, hence the name.

Handwoven in Northern Ghana

This lamp brings together two disparate groups of craftspeople: SWOPA (The Sirigu Women's Organization for Pottery and Art) in Northern Ghana and TREM, a family-run lighting workshop in Baja California, Mexico.

Founded in 1997 by Melanie Kasise in remote Northern Ghana, SWOPA focuses on reviving traditional artworks while creating income opportunities for local women. The organization provides skill training to young women in the region and serves as a platform for artisans to develop their craft. Through our partnership, SWOPA connects these traditional weaving practices with contemporary markets while ensuring fair compensation for their work.

Each shade is individually handwoven using traditional techniques, creating subtle variations that showcase the craft mastery of SWOPA's weavers.

The tripod bases are hand-welded at Trem from North American steel. With over 100 years of combined experience in custom lighting, this family-operated workshop in Baja California brings incredible precision and attention to detail.

We chose steel not just for its clean cool aesthetic, but also for its sustainability. Steel is considered an eco-friendly material, and is in fact the most recycled material in the world because of its unique ability to be recycled indefinitely without a loss of quality (called multi-cycling).
