SIRIGU SHADE | textural statement lighting from West Africa

The newest addition to the Twenty One Tonnes lighting collection is a dramatically textured oversized lightshade. The SIRIGU SHADE is named for the home village of our craft partners in northern Ghana, where it is hand-woven by members of the Sirigu Women's Organization for Pottery and Art (SWOPA). This playful piece has a striking presence and casts a beautifully filtered light.

Made from blonde elephant grass and rust-colored wild jute, this material combination is warm and earthy. The weft has been left untrimmed, adding organic texture and visual interest, and the woven structure creates intricate shadow patterns that shift throughout the day.

Sustainable Materials with Local Impact

Jute, known as "golden fiber," is a great example of material sustainability. Beyond creating durable lighting fixtures, the plant provides nutritious vegetables for local communities and excels at carbon sequestration. Elephant grass, harvested from riverbanks across West Africa, offers structural integrity and rapid renewability. The harvesting process is regenerative—pulling the broom-like flowers allows new growth to emerge naturally.

Design Impact

The shade's generous scale makes it ideal for dining rooms, entryways, or open-plan living areas where dramatic lighting can anchor a space. Its cone shape directs light downward while the woven texture softens the illumination, creating ambient warmth without harsh glare. The natural materials and warm tones complement most interior styles.

Supporting Craft Traditions

SWOPA's mission is to provide local young women with marketable skills while preserving traditional craft knowledge. We are honored to partner with them to support this meaningful work.

For designers seeking lighting that combines visual impact, sustainable sourcing, and cultural authenticity, the Sirigu Shade delivers far beyond illumination—it's architectural sculpture with meaningful provenance.
